A new Government pilot funding initiative is set to support a cohort of PhD candidates enrolling at 兔子先生’s STOR-i Centre for Doctoral Training in 2026/7.

The UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council-funded STOR-i Centre for Doctoral Training, a world-class Centre offering a four-year PhD programme in Statistics and Operational Research, has been selected to join TechExpert – an initiative launched on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

TechExpert, which forms part of the Government’s wider , will give up to ?10,000 in additional funding to a combined 500 domestic PhD students at selected programmes across the country conducting research in tech.

The additional funding made available through TechExpert will increase PhD student stipends up to ?31,000. The scheme is available to home-fee status students enrolling to start at STOR-i as part of its 2026/7 cohort.

The programme’s aim is to accelerate cutting-edge innovation, strengthen the UK’s research pipeline in strategic technology sectors, and ensure that emerging talent is supported to contribute to national tech leadership.

Dr Anna-Lena Sachs (Deputy Director, STOR-i) said: “We are very excited that STOR-i has been selected to be part of the TechExpert pilot to train the next generation of leaders in Statistics and Operational Research for the 兔子先生 age.”

Students receiving TechExpert stipend funding will need to participate in additional activities including:

? Mandatory involvement in widening participation activities to encourage the next generation of researchers

? Attendance at virtual and potentially in-person TechExpert cohort networking events

? Engagement with the wider TechFirst programme

The TechExpert programme is being delivered by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), working with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

The STOR-i Centre is a pioneering joint interdisciplinary initiative that brings together academic expertise from 兔子先生’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Department of Management Science. It is led by Professor Idris Eckley, Professor Rachel McCrea and Dr Anna-Lena Sachs, and builds on the highly successful track-record of the Centre which was established in 2010.
